about me

Hello!

So you want to know a little about me? I am a kid/baby/family photographer, but I guess that much is clear! I am 23 years old, living in Wellington, New Zealand, but traveling a fair bit to Australia and the States (I hope to add Europe to this little list soon)

I graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Design – majoring in Graphics, in 2009. Although my career didn’t end up following that path, I have a huge appreciation for good design, and plan to start featuring more of my favourite things on this blog in 2010.

I love to create… when I’m not taking photos or working, you can usually find me cooking, sewing, or dreaming up some crazy project that may or may not come out as it appeared in my head (the latest was a felt-ball pot mat, I got as far as the balls, which are now scattered through out the house)

I have a doberman/chihuahua, Ruby (the doberman half is all in her head) who keeps the household entertained with her silly self.

I feel so lucky to be doing the thing I love, and to share the love, Rachel Devine and I are working on an exciting project for people wanting to learn how to use their fancy cameras and take rocking photos they can be proud of. More info on that coming soon!

All my photos are taken on a Canon 5D (not the MII though, I wish, oh that HD video is beautiful). My 24-70mm 2.8L lens doesn’t leave my camera, it is a pretty awesome lens for my needs. I don’t actually have any others at the moment, but I have my eye on a nice 50mm. All photos are shot in JPG and edited in Photoshop using the actions I created, Childs Play & Twirl

I suppose that most people share a portrait on these about pages, huh?… I am one of those annoying people who doesn’t show up on ‘film’, evidenced by my pathetic lack of photos on Facebook and elsewhere on the internets. But I am trying to get better about being on the other side of the lens on occassion. This is probably the best you will find at the moment… Taken by my lovely friend and business partner, Rachel Devine (small child also provided by aforementioned).

Hi there,

I have heard such great things about your Childs play from very top photographers! I just bought PS Elements 8 today & was going to download Childsplay as soon as it arrived. I am soooo bummed out because now I see that your stuff does not work with elements. I thought PS 6 & 7 was elements. I can’t even find PS 6 or 7 only Elements & Cs3 & 4 come up when I do a search. Anyway, is there any way that your actions will be Elements compatible in the future? If not can you reccomend anything at all that is like Childsplay?

Thanks,
Kath

Thanks Karen! I shoot in whatever is the highest quality. Fine I guess? I’ve been in business three years, but have been taking photos about 4.

cool! I’m from Milan (Italy) too! It would great to see you here! love your website and your photos of course! you are so young!
I have a question for you: I have a 24-70 f2.8, (shooting with canon 500D) and am interested in buying a portrait lens. I heard good things about the 85mm f2.8 and the 50mm f1.4. I’m afraid the 85 would be a repetition, more or less. What do you think? consider I’m a beginner…
Thanks a lot!

Peta, I’m so happy I found your blog. I’m a fairly new photographer in Florida/USA, I found it by reading an interview of photographer, Brenda Acuncius. She listed a few of her favorites and your name was among them. Now, you are one of my faves as well! Back in 2007 I was one of those clueless people with the fancy DSLR (Nikon D300) shooting on Auto and hoping the many photos of my boys would turn out okay. All the photography books were/are so confusing and use “tech-y jargon” we “normal” people don’t know anything about. Early last year, I joined Flickr and found the push and drive to pursue photography. All last year was about learning my craft and practice practice practice. I was approached by Getty Images and a few other companies seeking freelance photogs. This year, is about building my business and my portfolio. I’m halfway through Beyond Snapshots and have found it the most informative book so far. It breaks everything down so well, and even things I now know like ISO and expousure, etc. are easily reafirmed and refreshed. Thank you and Rachel for such a great source. I really admire your work, and I visit your site and blog often for inspiration and encouragement. Maybe someday you will write a book for newbies like me who are just starting out? It’s so hard to find mentorship and friendship with established photographers and I know I have tons of questions! Again, your work is great. Keep it up! ~Marta
